Hello there,
I am a retired programmer/UNIX admin, and have supported the FSF since about 1995 after I discovered bash, gcc and emacs source on a free CD included in a book. I think it was "Power tools for UNIX", a brilliant book, that I still have.
Over the years I have sent many patches in to the package maintainers, I have used Linux from Scratch for many years, so compiling my entire system is normal. My biggest claim to fame was stopping the release of a gcc version, and causing the project manager use my patch.
I like to stay active, and am happy to own home computers that are hugely more powerful than many of the servers and mainframes that I worked on.
Coreboot is a final step; everything from the BIOS to glxgears has been compiled from source.
